'CHESS' the Musical

In less than four weeks’ time, the cast of ‘Chess’ will take to the stage to perform a complex rock opera about love, betrayal and fame, set to music by the songwriters of Swedish band ABBA and the lyricist of hit musicals ‘Evita’ and ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’. For a musical about a seemingly boring board game, it’s centred around a love triangle between the American grandmaster, his chess second and his Russian opponent in picturesque Merano, Italy and steamy Bangkok, Thailand. Set in the early 1980s, Cold War tensions run high between the United States and the Soviet Union as both sides battle it out to win the international chess title, but personal feelings get in the way. Both players are consistently scrutinised by the press, the Russian is torn between his country and his lover, and both delegations make dodgy deals to ensure the match goes their way. We have been auditioning and rehearsing for the show since September, with everyone working hard in weekly rehearsals and learning songs at home. Also, this year, we are lucky to have our biggest-ever orchestra of 17 musicians to accompany the entire performance, as well as a dedicated backstage crew. We can’t wait to bring ‘Chess’ to Spalding on Thursday 7th March and Friday 8th March at 7pm. Tickets are now on sale and can be booked by following this link: https://www.ticketsource.co.uk/spalding-grammar-school.

Please encourage as many friends and family to come as possible. Our cast, crew and orchestra will be so grateful for your support.

We look forward to seeing you at the performances!
