DT: Key Stage 5
At Key Stage 5, students can follow either the AQA Product Design A Level or AQA Technical Level 3 in Mechatronic Engineering.
Product Design
Product Design consists of researching and identifying a need and solving a problem through development and manufacture and evaluation of the final outcome.
Technical Level3 in Mechatronic Engineering
This level 3 course consists of working with real life local engineering firm problems, Health & Safety and current legislation, material investigations, theoretical calculations of engineering structures and appropriate design solutions, culminating in product manufacture of a functioning prototype. The course is studied over 8 modules, which takes 2 A-level subject timeslots and can earn twice as many UCAS points as a single A-Level.
Enrichment
Students have extensive opportunities to develop their skills beyond the classroom. Our workshops and computer facilities are available during lunchtime and after school, providing a supportive environment for independent work and creative projects. In addition, Key Stage 5 students are encouraged to make full use of these resources during their Personal Study lessons, enabling them to deepen their understanding and refine their practical abilities.
We actively promote participation in regional and national competitions, giving students the chance to showcase their talents and gain valuable experience. The department has a proud history of success, including reaching the regional finals of prestigious events such as the Land Rover 4×4 in Schools Challenge and the Engineering Education Scheme for England.
To further inspire innovation and teamwork, we run a variety of extracurricular clubs for all Key Stages, including the Lego Mindstorms Club and the Engineering Club. These clubs provide students with hands-on opportunities to design and create their own products using our state-of-the-art facilities, fostering creativity, problem-solving, and collaboration.
